3 Tips to Begin Your Meditation Practice
What happens when you begin to meditate is that you begin to feel yourself. You start to gain insight into your life and your purpose.
At first, meditation practices focus on the breath. You can begin this practice by counting the seconds as the breath comes into your lungs, then counting how long we're holding our breath and then how long we exhale. We can do this until we are present and mindful.
Try it now. Wherever you are, close your eyes and take a giant deep breath in through your nose.
Hold it at the top for a few moments; then slowly exhale, releasing the air out through your mouth. Repeat twice more and gently open your eyes.
Cultivating a daily meditation practice, even if its for 5 minutes each time, helps you connect to yourself and the God of your understanding.
Here's three tips I was given when I began my meditation practice:
Tip 1: Don’t Worry about Clearing Your Mind. Our mind is supposed to be thinking when we're awake, so just let the thoughts flow in and out of your mind and they'll quiet themselves naturally in time. Just keep bringing your attention back to your breath and keep practicing for a few minutes at a time. For some people the sound of the ocean, rain, or a stream helps both calm and focus their thoughts while blocking out external noise, such as traffic, in order to enjoy the meditation experience more. Some need to be guided through the meditation by someone else until they develop their own practice. Yet some others explore with unique sounds, like that of a singing tibetan bowl to calm their spirit and focus their thoughts.
Tip 2: Write It Down. If you’re anything like me, when you have a lightbulb moment, you don’t
want to forget it. Exciting thoughts and spontaneous ideas will come to you during meditation.
They may be great plans about your business, a creative combination to try out in the kitchen, or your next home project. When these brilliant nuggets pop into your mind, you can either keep diving down the idea train or you can take a moment to record the thought on a pad or micro-recorder.
Tip 3: Keep It Regular. Just like yoga, we can talk about the benefits and understand how great
life will be with all this practice, but it only works if you actually do it. The same rules apply here: five minutes is better than nothing, and five minutes a day or twice a day, every day, adds up to a whole lot of good feeling. Try it out for one week and you’ll feel a big difference. First thing in the morning is a great time to set the habit.
You don’t even have to leave your bed to start this practice. Simply sit up, get comfortable, and pay attention to your breath for five minutes. Maybe even focus on the word Thank you as you exhale, if your thoughts start to take you away from your
breath. If your thoughts start to drift again, guide yourself back again with another Thank You to HP or the universe around you. After your five minutes, go about your day as usual and notice if you feel any different.
WARNING: you might start to see yourself differently, with more compassion; and you might start to see more possibilities in your life. You might even have the desire to help others who could use your support. Get ready for some great stuff to transform you from the inside out.
