Recovery Road

I came across the Recovery Road tv show quite by accident. I was sitting down for lunch and decided to catch something on tv to relax for a bit before going back to more errands. Within the first 10 minutes I was having flashbacks. It is not a reality show but aspects of it could easily be autobiographical.

Scenes from my senior year in high school and freshman year in college quickly flashed in my mind's eye as a quick moving montage of my past. It was a painful look at myself in the last week of my using and my first few weeks on my own personal journey of recovery, but this time  from a clear-headed observer's perspective of someone with 30 yrs clean.

The identificaiton was both painful and full of gratitude that I don't have to be there ever again unless i choose to be. So very grateful for the freedom from the insanity of addiction AND early recovery.

The show is a must see and I'll definitely be tuning in to watch.

Spiritually Refreshed

A friend allowed me to post the following thoughts he shared with me here.

Refresh: to make someone feel less tired or hot.

Refreshing: pleasingly new or different.

Spiritually refreshed and glad to be alive (mentioned twice in Step 12 in NA's Basic Text).

As I cycle through the 12 steps of NA I become aware of the changes in my belief system. And each time thru I further tweak or refine my belief system. In our Basic Text it says " Everything we know is subject to revision, especially what we know about the truth ".

I lived a lifetime of being misinformed by the misinformed. As a result, I lived a life of impending doom, based on delusional self-destructive information. The 12 steps helped me to examine my beliefs and offered me an alternative belief system. One that was spiritually rewarding, beyond my wildest dreams. So today I give back what was so freely given to me. The only condition I place on another is what was placed on me : I had to want this. An admission that is best expressed by action.

My behavior will always speak for itself. My desire for change is contingent on practicing the principles of our program. If I don't  practice or stop practicing, I can always revert back to the desperate dying addict who came in the rooms of NA. Yes the process can stop; either I'm working on something or something is working on me. My disease doesn't take days off.

Tanya's Story

journey2

I'm an addict in recovery and my name is Tanya. I remember when I first started thinking about getting into recovery I had no idea what recovery was. How do I do it? Where do I go, and when I get there, what will recovery be like? Will I magically just be in recovery? I imagined that recovery was some kind of fantastic destination and I was simply going to arrive there one day.

Theta's Experience with Meditation

We received the following contribution from Theta living in the Bahamas. Thank you for the contributions and comments of encouragement we have received. You can share your experience strength and hope by emailing us at:  30najourney [at] gmail.com

3 Tips to Begin Your Meditation Practice

What happens when you begin to meditate is that you begin to feel yourself. You start to gain insight into your life and your purpose.

At first, meditation practices focus on the breath. You can begin this practice by counting the seconds as the breath comes into your lungs, then counting how long we're holding our breath and then how long we exhale. We can do this until we are present and mindful.

Try it now. Wherever you are, close your eyes and take a giant deep breath in through your nose.

Hold it at the top for a few moments; then slowly exhale, releasing the air out through your mouth. Repeat twice more and gently open your eyes.

History of Traditions Worksheets

Many years ago, before the creation of the Basic Text, recovering addicts learned about Traditions partly from personal experience while doing service and partly from their predecessors. At some point NA members developed a Traditions Worksheets for all 12 Traditions similar to the ones developed for the 12 Steps (scroll down to see a sample below). These were used with such great results that eventually a few regions developed their own workbooks to help educate the trusted servants serving within their regions. Ultimately, though, they have been used as inspiration for the creation of the Traditions Workbook that has been presented to the fellowship for review.

Old NA Sponsor/Sponsee Worksheets - Step 2

Step 2: "We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity."

The insanity referred to in this step is not the insanity of using drugs. We were restored to the sanity of not using by surrendering in Step 1. We now find ourselves clean, with our lives in disorder and still unmanageable in many areas. Much of that un-manageability comes from doing the same things we used to do and expect different results each time. Of course, the results of our choices and actions are always the same, un-manageability and insanity in our lives. What is there to do? Either go on the best we can or begin to change our actions and choices, with the awareness of the results of our second step as our guide through recovery.

Feeling blue? Then recovery comedy is for you!

The Process of Restoration

In my early recovery, when i was overwhelmed with life and responsibility my sponsor would recommend bathroom breaks with a little light reading to deal with those feelings.

It was before the existence of cell phones and the publishing of the basic text, so my go to literature was the little white booklet. By the end of my first year I practically had it memorized.

Then my sponsor began giving me what today i know to be exercises in being present or mindfullness. The aim was to help me learn how yo slow things down and reduce stress.

Old NA Sponsor/Sponsee Worksheets - Step 1

Old NA Sponsor/Sponsee Worksheets - Step 1

This is based on the Old Mimeographed Sponsor/Sponsee worksheet. This and others like it were used as models when the World Literature Committee of NA began its work on the Step-working guide. We've come quite a way since then.  I still use these with my sponsees as a quicker way to go through the first round steps. Many have done several rounds of steps with me.

The instructions I received when working the First Step was that the step needed to be applied to all areas of our lives if we are to be successful at walking on this path of recovery. This is called LIVING the Steps. The bottom line is that drugs are just one symptom of our disease. The only relief we get from our disease, in all its manifestations, is by working the Steps. It is a new and exciting experience that will bring many changes into our lives and help you create and live a life beyond your wildest dreams.

Instructions: Get a notebook and write down one question at a time followed by your answer. When you are done, share the answers with your sponsor honestly and openly, much like you do when you step into a meeting and self-identify yourself when you're raise your hand and say you’re an addict.  This worksheet is also meant to give you an understanding of your relationship and understanding with your disease and how NA may help.

1. Write your own definition of "admitted."
2. What is your definition of “powerless”?
3. What is the nature of your addiction?
4. In the dictionary, look up and write out the definition of "powerless".
5. Write how you were powerless over your addiction when using.
6. Why is ‘admitting’ we suffer from the disease of addiction so important?
7. Describe some of the things/situations you are currently powerless over.
8. Describe some of the ways you have been isolating.
9. How good are you at being a part of something?
10. What do you have to offer to the "we" of N.A.?
11. What does the word "were" mean as used in the 1st step?
12. What is the disease of addiction?
13. Why is being clean not enough?
14. Give 5 examples of how your life was unmanageable in your addiction?
15. Give 5 examples of how your life was or is unmanageable in recovery?
16. How do I apply the First Step in my life today?
17. How are our Steps different than any other 12 Step programs?
18. Am I willing to accept the Steps as a way to live?
19. What does "had become" mean when used in the 1st Step?
20. Who/what managed your life when using and who manages your life in recovery?
21. What does sponsorship have to do with the 1st Step?
22. Write out benefits of accepting your powerlessness over your addiction.
23. Write out the benefits of surrendering your life to N.A.

One last thing that must be pointed out is the "WE" portion of this Step and all our Steps. All our Steps begin with WE except for the 12th, which has the word WE in the center. This makes us different than any other 12 Step program.

Narcotics Anonymous is a "WE" program not a me program. Part of our strength and power comes from WE. Together we can. I can't, WE can. This is why we need meetings for the rest of our lives. This is why we need contact daily with other recovering addicts.

A statement many newcomers may' ask is, "If I stop using, I should be cured and I don't need the program or meetings anymore." The only way I know to clear up this denial is to answer this way. A non-addict (a non-addict is a person who does not have the addictive personality) who goes to the hospital for an operation is given a physically addictive drug for pain during a period of two weeks. If he becomes physically addicted they detox him and he goes on with his life without any problem. However, addicts with the disease of addiction, having addictive personalities are unable to just stop with no problems, we were addicted long before we used.

New Year... New You!

A warm welcome to all!

Its a New Year, with a new look, to help create a new you!

And so the journey begins!

This time, however, we begin with friends and loved ones who have been part of our journey. Sisters through the years or from just a few moments ago.  The idea to create this gathering place to share positive inspirational  thoughts came from a few dear sisters in recovery who wanted to receive inspirational messages. However, they wanted to do it via email. But I thought: 'why limit this to just those in our circle'.

So after thinking about how best to achieve her dream and help inspire as many women in recovery around the world, especially those who are in emerging NA areas around the world with few meetings and great distances between them, I thought I should create this page to benefit us all.

However, If you don't want to visit this page daily and just want to receive inspirational recovery messages just by email, you can opt to sign up for the email version of this site by sending me an email to the following address [please remove all the spaces between the words in the address before sending]:
30 na journey at gmail . com

Please write in the subject line: SUBSCRIBING

I will then set you up on the subscription list and you can receive the post directly by email. I did this because we have sisters around the world in areas where NA is new and who need support and who have little access to technology. So they can come and visit here when they can.

To get NA Recovery related material (such as literature, NA speaker recordings, etc., please visit our Recovery Resources Page.

For access to NA Approved Literature please vist NA's Literature Page

So, if you happen to visit here please feel free to share your Experience, Strength and Hope (ESH) on the topic of the day OR the steps and traditions of your choice.

Sharing warm recovery hugs,

Journey
